Q: Gordon-Levitt is an easygoing guy in person. What’s he like as a director?
A: He actually happens to be a very sweet, easygoing guy. But he’s really thoughtful. He’s provocative in conversation. He wants to probe and to speak at length about different character traits, relationships. He’s a serious person. I think that directors start out as serious people who want to get the conversation started.
Q: “Lost in Translation” came out 10 years ago. Not to make you feel old. You’ve had a variety of roles since. Do you always go for something different?
A: It’s crazy to think that was 10 years ago. But when I really think about it, and I think about the work that I’ve done, it feels like 10 years of work, so it’s not that hard to believe. As I get older, I feel like just by nature I have a more colorful array of opportunities to choose from. As I grow more confident as an actor and a person, I feel more confident in stretching myself as an artist and working on things that are challenging and I haven’t done before, and taking risks and being sort of content with the outcome, no matter what, just knowing I took a risk.
