Q: In the film you’re referred to as a “dime” — a perfect 10. Did it bother you to play a woman so obviously objectified?
A: No. The conversations Joe and I were having … we opened up the conversation to sort of fill out the Barbara character. She wasn’t just, as you say, a dime. She wasn’t just an annoying girlfriend who hates porn. She’s a stereotype, but this film, I think, she’s sort of humanized in this film. I have the opportunity to really flesh her out. We talked about why she is the way she is. She has to be a sympathetic character. She isn’t supposed to be the villain. She has to be someone the audience can relate to in some ways.
Q: It’s tricky. At times you want to smack both characters, but there has to be something to draw us in.
A: You want to spend time to the characters because they’re interesting to watch, not just, oh, that hot girl who’s annoying to her boyfriend. You’ve got to want to find out more about them. You want to see the conflict. That comes from a lot of rehearsals that we did, a lot of conversations that we had. It’s the product of a lot of work.
