Bar Refaeli is an Israeli model best known for her appearances in American magazine Sports Illustrated, and for her relationship with Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio. Refaeli made her first modelling appearance at the age of just eight months, in a baby commercial. She first appeared in Sports Illustrated in 2007, becoming the first Israeli woman to do so, later modelling for the cover of the magazine in 2009. Refaeli started dating Leonardo DiCaprio in 2005 after meeting him at a Las Vegas party. After a brief break in 2009, the pair officially split in 2011.

In 2008, Refaeli became the face of clothing line Hurley, and the Diddy cologne, “I Am King.” In 2009, Bar became the spokesperson of Garnier International and modeled for the 2009/2010 advertising campaign for Morellato watches and jewelry.

Refaeli co-starred the Israeli TV series Pick Up in 2005. In October 2008, she co-hosted the Bravo special program Tommy Hilfiger Presents Ironic Iconic America, based on the book Ironic Iconic America written by George Lois. She returned as a program host in 2009, this time for MTV’s brief revival of House of Style. She served as a guest judge on cycle 4 of Germany’s Next Topmodel hosted by Heidi Klum

Israeli model began a relationship with American actor Leonardo DiCaprio in November 2005 after meeting him at a Las Vegas party thrown for members of U2. In the course of their trip to Israel in March 2007, the couple met with Israeli president Shimon Peres and visited Refaeli’s hometown of Hod HaSharon. The relationship ended in June 2009. Numerous media reports, however, indicate that in 2010 Bar Refaeli and Leonardo DiCaprio are “back on track”.

Then in 2010, Maj. Gen. Avi Zamir spoke out against the model during a speech at IDC when asked about Refaeli's lack of prominence in the country's PR activities.

Of course, rather than boost Israel's profile, the 27-year-old's appearance in the new campaign has only revisited the controversy over her "draft-dodging."

Refaeli acknowledged the controversy on Instagram, stating:

"You can use the clip for the Foreign Ministry or drop it, but my Instagram feed has more readers than Israel’s most popular newspaper [Yedioth Ahronoth]!”

By marrying a family friend in 2007, she could continue her already-successful modeling career, which needless to say became even more successful indeed.

This hasn't sat so well with many Israelis. Nor is it the first time that Bar Rafaeli's military service has become a point of contention in her homeland.

When the blonde bombshell landed a lucrative campaign with Fox in 2008, a boycott was threatened, demanding that Refaeli complete her military service.

Critics were assuaged when the fashion company promised that the model would visit hospitalized IDF soldiers and encourage enlistment.

The reason? Refaeli's evasion of the compulsory military draft, which has become a standard coming-of-age experience for 18-year-old Israelis.

Israel's Channel 2 News first reported the contents of a letter sent by spokesman Big. Gen. Yoav Mordechai to the Foreign Ministry Director.

The IDF called out "the choice of a representative who did not serve in the military as an official presenter on behalf of Israel" and for forgiving Bar.

Mordechai writes that the IDF has worked for years to "strengthen the value of IDF service, and to fight the phenomenon of enlistment evasion."

According to Israeli law, men are required to serve three years while women are required to serve two. Refaeli, however, found a construction loophole.

Bar Refaeli volunteers for Project Sunshine, a non-profit organization providing free services and programs for children facing life-threatening illnesses. She has also volunteered for organization Ahava, which has been caring for pets abandoned in Northern Israel during the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict.
Bar Refaeli and film director Shahar Segal have agreed to do a free campaign under the slogan “One Bag Less” against the use of plastic bags.
